Who are Sierra Camp guests?
Our guests are all Stanford Alumni and their families. We have many alumni who graduated in the 70s and 80s, as well as alumni as recent as 2016. Our guests have graduated from both Stanford University as undergraduates and graduates of our graduate schools (Stanford Law School, Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford School of Education, etc.). We have guests who have founded their own companies, who are practicing doctors or lawyers, who are educators, who are artists, who are parents, who are project managers, who are designers, who are social workers, who are in the world of non-profits, who are scientists, who are authors, who are recruiters, who are engineers, who are multifaceted, and most importantly who are invested in getting to know you and are excited to help you figure out your life paths!
We also want to acknowledge that currently our guest population does not reflect the makeup of Stanford in recent years. It is reflective of Stanford in the 80s, where the student body was much whiter than it is now. We also want to acknowledge that some of our guests come from a wealthier background. It is important to Camp Leadership to acknowledge the privileges and identities of our guests to help inform our Staff of the clientele they will be working with during the Summer.
As a management team, we strive for transparency where we can. We want to share the work we are doing to help diversify our guest population. We are actively recruiting families of underrepresented backgrounds at Camp to apply for a reservation at Camp – the more folks that we are able to get onto our reservation waitlist, the more diverse we can help make Camp. We also will be continuing to hold space for BIPOC Guests and Staff to mingle at the start of the week during our BIPOC Social shift. Every year, we strive to make steps toward building a more diverse, more inclusive space at Stanford Sierra Camp. We wholeheartedly believe in the value of a more diverse community, acknowledge our shortcomings, and are making steps toward building that vision.
